  1. July 13, 2009 - ’00 VReds come up short at Lobsterfest AAA Cup !

This past weekend the ’00 V-Reds participated in their final tournament of 2009 season. While they had hoped to continue on their winning ways and finish the season strong, the month layoff from their last tournament proved to be too much as the kids completed the round-robin portion of the tournament with a 1-3 record and missed out on the playoffs.

Their first game of the tournament was against the always tough Colts from Barrie, Ontario. With only one weekend of practice time since their last tournament at the end May, the kids came out flat and could never really muster any type of attack and were badly outshot. If it wasn’t for the VReds stellar goaltending the score could have been much worse than the 4-0 outcome.

The second game was against the Chicago Cougars #2 team. Chicago typically sends two teams to this tournament. The boys came out much harder in this game and were leading 3-2 heading in the final stretch of the third period. But a letdown proved costly with the Cougars scoring two quick goals to snatch the win from the boys.

The boys first game of Day 2 was against the other Chicago Cougars team. Once again the boys came out flat and could not muster much of an attack. And when scoring opportunities presented themselves, they could not bury them. In the end the boys ended up on the short end of a 5-0 loss.

With the playoffs no longer a possibility, the boys wanted to complete the tournament, and their extremely positive season, with one final win. The opponent was the host team, the Portland Top Dogs. Coming out hard and never looking back, the boys wanted to ensure that they would live up to their mantra of “Never Give Up; Never Let Up !”. In the end, the boys posted their final convincing win of the season 7-1 !

With the season now over, the coaches can look back and be extremely pleased with the team’s performance. A fantastic group of players with fantastic attitudes and work ethic. The coaches could not have asked for a better group of players.

Well done, Boys !!!! See ya next season !

  2. June 1, 2009 - ’00 V-Reds Win Big in Boston !!!

The ’00 V-Reds continued their excellent season by capturing Gold this past weekend at the Skaters Edge AAA Cup held in Marlborough, Mass. Competing against some of the strongest teams across New England, the boys were on a mission to demonstrate the values of the V-Red Prospects program, hard work and determination.

The tournament began on Friday with one game scheduled against Team Excel from Albany, NY. The boys came out hard taking a 5-2 lead into the third period. A minor let down made the game interesting early in the third but the boys pushed back to complete the 6-4 win.

The next day, the boys were to play two games. Game one was against the North Connecticut Wings. A very early start time was not going to affect the team’s play. Once again, the boys built an early lead and did not look back posting a convincing 6-2 victory.

Game two that day was against the Adirondack Ice Hogs. Wanting to complete the round robin portion of the tournament undefeated, the boys continued their march towards the playoff round. In the most physical game the boys have ever experienced, the boys did not back down. Thunderous hits were the norm. Bumps and bruises were handed out gratuitously with some players not able to finish the game. In the end, the VReds were not to be denied posting a hard fought 7-3 win.

Finishing the round robin portion with a perfect 3-0 record, the team was well positioned for the playoff round.

However, due to the tie breaking formula, the ’00 V-Reds were the second seed heading into the playoff round. Their semi-final opponent were the Westchester Selects of New York. A small but fast team, the Selects came out hard. Deciding that this was going to be their day and that they were going to take the next step in their development, the boys executed the game plan to perfection. The result was a 6-4 win putting them into the championship game later that day.

Their opponent in the final was the other undefeated team during the round robin, the North Jersey Nordiques. It was only fitting that the top two teams during the round robin portion meet in the final to determine who wins gold.

During the championship final, the boys once again showed that this was going to be their day. Building an early lead and backing it up with some solid defense, the team cruised to a convincing 8-3 win and captured their first gold medal !

’00 V-Reds are Skaters Edge AAA Cup Champions !!!

The coaching staff is extremely proud of the team and their accomplishments this season. They have worked extremely hard and deserve to be rewarded.

The team now takes a few weeks off before preparations begin in early July for their final tournament of the 2009 season, the Lobsterfest AAA Cup being held in Portland, Maine.

  3. May 19, 2009 - Inaugural Trip to Quebec a Huge Success !!!

This past weekend the ’00 V-Reds made their first trip to Quebec to participate in the prestigious NRJ AAA Coupe held in Laval, PQ. With the ’00 division having two pools of 6 teams each, and only the top 2 teams from each pool advancing to the semi-finals, the boys knew it was not going to be an easy task. But wanting to give a good first impression the kids practiced extremely hard leading up the tournament and adopted the mantra of “Never Give up & Never Let Up” for the weekend. Knowing that the competition in Quebec is always of high caliber, the boys wanted to get off to a strong start and control their fate.

First up on day one were the Montreal AAA Kings. Having travelled 9 hrs the day before, the boys came out a little flat and quickly fell behind 2-0 after one period. Not being the start the boys were hoping for, they came to life and scored 4 unanswered goals over the final two periods en route to a 4-2 win.
Next up were the Diables Rouge R.Nord of Quebec City. Falling behind early again 1-0, the boys stepped it up with another win, 5-2. Completing day one with a 2-0 record had the team in the thick of the playoff race.

Day two proved to be even more challenging. Up first were the tough Prospects AAA. The game was one of the toughest the boys were ever to participate in up until that point. A tight battle all game, it was not decided until mid-way through the third period when , shorthanded 2 players, the ’00 VReds took advantage of a Prospects breakdown and scored the game’s only goal. Final 1-0. Record 3-0.

The final game of the round robin was to be a real test. Playing the Albatros of Quebec, the boys needed a tie to secure a spot in the semi-finals while the Albatros required the win. Neither team were giving an inch the entire game. Opportunities were there for both teams. A back and forth battle kept everyone in attendance on their feet. All the scoring was done during the first period. The end result was a fitting 1-1 tie. It was enough to put the ’00 VReds into the semi-finals the next day against the Montreal Metro Wolverines.

The semi final game was to be the team’s fifth game in three days. Heading into game, the Wolverines had only allowed one goal in their four round robin games. Expecting to be up against a very tough team, the kids prepared themselves to leave it all on the ice.

The score was tied 0-0 after the first period. It was quite the accomplishment given the skill and size of their opponent. The Wolverines finally scored late in the second period and mid-way through the third period en route to a 2-0 win. The Wolverines went on to claim the Championship later that day.

To say that the boy’s initial trip to Quebec was a huge success would be an understatement. Those in attendance during the boy’s games were full of compliments and admired the team’s work ethic. The boys definitely set the bar high for the program and the coaches could not be more proud of their team.

The boys are not done. Preparations now begin for the Skaters Edge AAA tournament to be held in Marlborough, Mass the weekend of May 29-31.

    Awesome weekend boys !!!

  4. May 4, 2009 - '00 V-Reds Crowned Silver Medalists !

This past weekend the '00 V-Reds competed in the inaugural Harrow AAA Cup held in Hooksett, NH. Competing against some of the strongest teams from Boston, New Hampshire and Connecticut the '00 VReds demonstrated that hard work and teamwork are cornerstones of their program. The tournament began on Friday morning against the host and eventual tournament champions the NH Knights. After travelling the long distance the day before the boys came out a little flat and ended up on the short end 6-3. The second game of the day against the Boston Bullies also proved to be quite a test. With the V-Reds battling all game and leading 3-2 in the final minutes the Bullies managed to squeak one in resulting in a 3-3 tie. The boys committed to a better showing on Day 2 and they did not disappoint. First up were the Connecticut Jr. Islanders. Playing a small but fast team, the boys knew that they had to step up their game if they were to make the medal round. Wanting to make the most of the opportunity, the '00 VReds came out hard and fast with the end result being a 3-1 victory. In the final game of the round robin, the boys were up against the unknown New England Generals. Entering this game with a 1-1-1 record and knowing that a win would secure them 2nd place in the round robin the boys came out hard and never let up. Not wanting to have the tie-breakers decide their fate, the boys filled the net posting a 11-0 win. Finishing the round robin portion of the tournament 2-1-1.

The next day was the medal round. The '00 V-Reds were scheduled to again play the Connecticut Jr. Islanders in the semi-finals. Knowing that the Islanders would be looking for a little revenge on their 3-1 loss the day before the V-Reds made sure that they were prepared. The V-Reds fired shot after shot at them and once the gates opened the boys did not let up posting a 6-1 win.

The '00 V-Reds were now scheduled to play the host NH Knights in the final later that day. This was to be the boys 6th game in 3 days. Playing with a short bench was taking its toll. Knowing that VRed players always compete to their highest ability, the boys gave it their all but it was not enough. The tank was empty ! The end result was a 7-1 loss. Overall the boys played extremely well. The coaching staff could not be more pleased with their efforts. Great job boys !!! Preparation now begins for their next tournament in Laval, PQ the weekend of May 15-17.

  5. April 14, 2009 - '00 V-Reds Capture Bronze !

This past weekend the 2009 tournament season got under way at the 2009 Lobster Cup held in Shediac, NB. The team wanted to show that hard work and dedication do in fact pay off with a strong showing. In fact, the boys outscored the opposition 28-5 ! In Game 1, the boys faced the local Jr. Wildcats. Not knowing what to expect, they were taking nothing for granted and came out hard posting a convincing 9-0 victory. In game 2, the unknown Coast Tire Cats provided the opposition. Once again, they wanted to stake their claim as one of the top teams in the tournament so the boys came out fast & furious posting a 13 - 1 win. Day 2 was to be more challenging as the boys faced the always tough PEI Riptide early in the morning. The Riptide did not disappoint. In a game which saw the lead exchanged several times, the boys played tough but in the end the Riptide prevailed 4-3 scoring the decisive goal with 1:25 remaining. The loss meant the VReds would be playing later that day in the bronze medal game. The opponent was once again the Coast Tire Cats, with a few additional recruits. Playing four games in two days proved tiring for the boys but they were not to be denied, prevailing 3-1 to capture the bronze. Way to go Boys !!! The team now begins preparations for the Harrow AAA Cup being held in New Hampshire the weekend of May 1-3.
