  6. June 10, 2009 - The UNB V-Red Prospects “AAA” U12 Girls hockey team travelled to Marlborough, Massachusetts last weekend to participate in the New England Sports Center Lady Flames Summer Splash Tournament.

The UNB V-Red Prospects played five different teams on their way to their Gold Medal Victory.

The V-Reds opened the tournament with a 4-1 win over the New Hampshire Kick Ice Coyotes on two goal performances by Murray River, Prince Edward Island native Alyssa Ferguson and Hampton, New Brunswick’s Gabrielle Vautour. Single assists were contributed by Alex Raby, Kailey Kane, Sarah Killaire, Marina Comeau and Vautour. Goal tending duties were shared by Hilary Cashin and Jessie O’Leary.

In the second game of the tournament the V-Reds outshot the Connecticut Summer Lights 24-4 on their way to a 3-1 victory on the two goal performance of Minto native Alex Raby and a single goal by Amherst’s Kailey Kane, with assists to Victoria Peterson, Mallory Rushton with two and Kane. In goal for the V-Reds was the youngest player on the V-Reds, nine year old Jessie O’Leary from Carleton County, New Brunswick.

Game three proved to be a challenge for the V-Reds as they outshot their opponents the Maine Selects by a margin of 20-10 but managed only one goal, winning 1-0 on a second period goal by Rushton, assisted by Peterson and Saint John native and defensive star, Stephanie Hampton.

Game four was part of the semi-final playoff round with unbeaten V-Reds, in second place, taking on the third place team, the New Hampshire Knights, outshooting the Knights 22-11 on the way to a decisive 5-1 victory. The Gold Medal Championship game saw the Ottawa Maplesoft Hawks, first place finishers, who through four games had not given up a single goal against, take on the UNB V-Red Prospects.

The Ottawa team had a special connection to the UNB Varsity Reds Senior National Champions of 1998 as they were coached by former UNB players Toby Burkitt and J. Campeau.

The V-Reds were well aware that they were in for a tough game against the “AAA” Ottawa elite girls and rose to the task with their first goal in the second period at 12:44 on an out of the box breakaway by Alex Raby. At 5:05 of the second period Peterson and Rushton set Raby up for her second goal in the 2-0 gold medal victory.

Shots on goal were 12-11 in favour of the Hawks, with each team taking three penalties.

  7. June 1, 2009 - The V-Red Prospects AAA U12 Girls hockey team were the only team east of Quebec City to attend the Quebec Challenge Cup 2009 Tournament in Quebec City, hosted by the Bulldogs of Quebec.

The U12 division was made up of nine teams with the top four teams advancing to the medal round. As luck would have it in the round robin games the V-Reds played the top three of the nine teams in the tournament, including the Connecticut Yankees, winners of the Montreal Warrior Meltdown tournament three weeks ago and the eventual gold medal champion in the Quebec Challenge Cup.

The V-Reds opened the tournament with a win over the Sherbrooke Griffons of Quebec, 2-1. The first V-Reds' goal was scored by, Amherst native Kailey Kane, assisted by Victoria Peterson and Mallory Rushton. The second goal was scored by Minto prospect Alex Raby, with assists to Saint John’s Gabrielle Vautour and Chelsea Doiron.

In the third game the V-Reds rebounded to beat Cascades AAA of Quebec 2-1 on a goal by Mallory Rushton, assisted by Gabrielle Vautour and Victoria Peterson and a goal by Gabrielle Vautour, assisted by Chelsea Doiron.

The V-Reds fourth and final game was against the Montreal Junior Lions a team they defeated three weeks before in the Montreal Meltdown by a 2-1 score. Unfortunately for the V-Reds they found themselves on the other side of the win column losing the game 2-1. The V-Reds' loan goal was an unassisted goal scored by Chelsea Doiron. The V-Reds needed a tie to advance to the medal round.

In the semi-final round the Cascades AAA were defeated by Connecticut Yankees 2-1 and Montreal Junior Lions defeated Pantheres Maurice 2-1. This set up the final with Connecticut Yankees coming out on top of Montreal Junior Lions 3-0.

  8. May 6, 2009 - The Warrior Meltdown “Quebec Women Prospects” Tournament was the team's first introduction to “AAA” girls’ hockey against some of the most competitive teams from Ontario and Quebec, and the Eastern United States. The V-Red Prospects were the only team from the Maritimes in the Tournament.

The U12 division was made up of twelve teams in two pools of six teams. As luck would have it they were in the strongest division with the eventual gold medal champion and unfortunately played the four stronger teams in their pool where as the other four teams each had one game against the 0-4 weakest team. All in the luck of the draw!

None the less the V-Red Prospects played well against the gold medal champion Connecticut Yankees, holding them to two goals, in a 2-1 loss in our first game of the tournament. Saint John native Chelsea Doiron scored the lone goal for the V-Reds.

In the V-Reds second game of the tournament they downed the Wave Platinum of Ontario, 2-1. The V-Reds’ goals were scored by Minto Prospect Alex Raby and Chelsea Doiron.

Game MVP was V-Reds goalie Jessie O’Leary, the youngest player on the team from Carleton County who played her first full game in the nets as a V-Red Prospect.

The fourth and final game for the V-Reds was a 4-4 tie against the Montreal Ice Storm. The V-Reds goals were scored by Victoria Peterson and Amherst native, Mallory Rushton, each with two goals.

Unfortunately for the V-Reds they were one goal short of moving into the semi-final round losing out to the Montreal Ice Storm.

In the semi-final round the Ice Storm were defeated by Team Pacific 2-1 and Connecticut Yankees defeated Montreal Avalanche 2–1. This set up the final with Connecticut Yankees coming out on top of Team Pacific 1-0.
